From the Library of Dennis Reid
The books in this auction come from the library of the respected Canadian art historian Dennis Reid, C.M. (1943–2023). He began his fifty-two-year career in 1967 as an assistant curator at the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa and subsequently became a curator and then chief curator at the Art Gallery of Ontario as well as professor of Canadian art history at the University of Toronto. The numerous exhibitions of Canadian art, both historical and contemporary, that he organized for venues at home and internationally were notable for their innovative exploration of traditional, avant-garde, and Indigenous art practice. A skilful writer, Reid produced three editions of A Concise History of Canadian Painting as well as many exhibition catalogues and contributions to other publications. His library of probably 10,000 books, mostly on art and Canadiana, housed everywhere in his Kensington Market condo, was also his passion.
The stamp in red ink at the front of the books is the name Dennis Reid in Chinese characters and serves as his Ex Libris signature. It’s in every book he acquired after about 1975. He went to China that year and fell in love with all things Chinese, his experience deeply affecting him for the rest of his life.
